The TAM complex is required for assembly of some type V secretion systems, including autotransporters (#136)
Recently, it was discovered that the TAM complex is required for translocating the passenger domain of beta-barrel proteins known as autotransporters, across the bacterial outer membrane (Selkrig et al., 2012). Structural and bioinformatic analysis of autotransporters reveals that they have similar domain structures to the intimin/invasin superfamily of proteins, suggesting the TAM complex may be involved in translocation of the intimin/invasin superfamily.
